Panelists call for effective policies to re-address issues of vulnerable communities in KP

PESHAWAR: Panelists at a roundtable discussion on a research study regarding social protection in KP”, suggested the government to make effective legislations and formulation of concrete policies, to redress issues of the vulnerable communities in the province.BUT_8772

The discussion session was arranged by the Refugees Affected and Hosting Areas (RAHA-UNDP KP) programme, funded by EU, at local hotel on Monday, aimed at to deliberate on its research study report, tilted  “Improving Avenues of Assistance for the Vulnerable in Khyber Pakhutnkhwa”, carried out in collaboration with Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) in four-districts of KP, includes Peshawar, Nowshera, Dir and Buner.

At the discussion, Dr Mehr Taj Roghani, Special Assistant to KP Chief Minister on Social Welfare, Dr Anoosha Khan, from Department of Gender Studies, University of Peshawar, Deputy Commissioner Peshawar Zaheerul Islam, Deputy Commissioner Dir-Lower Zubair Khan, and Aamir Mufi, SDPI Deputy Executive Director Waqar Ahmad, as panelists, while the Bushra Gohar, former chairperson National Assembly Standing Committee on Women Development acted as moderator.

Other notable speakers were included National Programme Director RAHA-KP Programme Arshad Majeed Mohmand, former provincial Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain, Mariam Bibi from Khwendo Kor,District commissioners from RAHA selected districts, Secretary education,  Ms Shukriya Syed, Provincial Program Manager, RAHA-KP.  Besides, a large number of members of civil society organizations, representatives of UN donors agencies, officials from various government-line departments, civil society leaders, NGOs, INGOs and social protection experts, also attended the session.

Participants while highlighting host of issues of vulnerable communities, have proposed to make effective legislation and devising a concrete mechanism to redress of all the issues and problems, being faced population, due to calamity and other disaster situation in the province. They also stressed upon the government to give special attention, and allocation of maximum funds to redress the problems of susceptible communities in the province.

Mr. Arshad Majeed, NPD RAHA-KP Programme in welcome address briefed the basic objective of RAHA-KP, funded by (UNDP & EU) programme, said that the main components of the RAHA Programme is improved social protection among co-existing host communities.

Following a rights-based approach, he further added the programme aims to strengthen and extend social protection schemes and mechanisms in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan and, in turn, improve social living conditions of the target communities.

Under this outcome, the official RAHA-KP said that special focus is given to the more vulnerable segments of the population such as women, children, the disabled and the elderly. The activities range from strengthening of Darul Amans to setting up of child protection centers, he added.

On the occasion, SDPI Deputy Executive Director Waqar Ahmad, briefed the salient features of the report-compiled by his organization on vulnerable communities in four-districts of the KP, and gave certain recommendations to cope with challenges and issues of the vulnerable people.

Bushra Gohar, while summarizing the substance of roundtable-discussion, have reinforced the provincial government to proactive work on the proposed recommendations in light of research-study of four-districts, to overcome with the growing problems of vulnerable communities in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Mehr Taji Roghani, in his keynote speech have reaffirmed the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is making efforts to redress the issues of the susceptible communities under a integrated approaches and policies. She informed that they have also planned to introduce a integrated strategy to utilize foreign donors-funding in a better manner, to rapid resolve the issues of affected-communities.
