EU extends support to develop refugees affected areas

PESHAWAR: Lars Gunnar Wigemark, European Union Ambassador to Pakistan, on Thursday, reaffirmed the commitment to continue support for socio-economic uplift and rehabilitation activities in Afghan Refugees affected areas under RAHA program Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.DSC_0961

This, he stated while addressing an inauguration ceremony regarding rehabilitation of water-supply scheme of Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), along with renovation of government primary school for girls, under Refugees Affected and Hosting Areas RAHA-UNDP, funded by European Union at village Chowkidarab Union Council Amankot, district Nowshera.

The water supply scheme at village Chowkidrab and Amankot rehabilitated at total cost of Rs.2.916 million in which Rs. 70,000 contributed by RAHA-UNDP KP, through which more than 4,873 locals would be benefited.

Lars Wigemark accompanied by HaoliangXu, Regional Director UNDP Bureau for Asia-Pacific, Timo Pakkala, EURS/UNDP Resident Representative, Marc Andre Franche, Country Director, Imtiaz Shahid, Deputy Speaker KP Assembly, Inayatullah Khan, KP Minister for Local government, Ali Amin Gandapur, Provincial Minister for Revenue and State Affairs, Atif Rahman, RAHA-UNDP National Program Director and others visited various developmental schemes, completed under RAHA program in district Nowshera.

For the program, the European Union has extended 39.8million Euros, for a period of four years, aimed to improve living standard of more than 0.1 million Pakistanis, who hosted or are still hosting Afghan Refugees.

RAHA also focuses on provision of health, education, livelihood facilities, economic stability and revival of businesses for the local community through various interventions. RAHA also provide training and skill development programs in Afghan Refugees Hosting areas in K-P.

HaoliangXu, said the RAHA-KP has a five-year program, which will helpful to bring economic stability, agriculture development and other need base facilities in Afghan Refugees Affected Areas in the province.

On the occasion, Gunnar Wigemark appraised the efforts of RAHA-KP program for socio-economic uplift and development activities in Afghan Refugees Affected areas. He assured the community that they would mobilize more funds and resources for their betterment and meeting basic needs in the locality.
